Charles L. (Chuck) Taylor, founder and principal of Awake! Consulting, an organization that encourages supply chain professionals to play active roles in shaping national energy policy, will receive the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals’ (CSCMP) 2010 Distinguished Service Award.
CSCMP presents the award annually to an individual who has made significant contributions to the art and science of supply chain and logistics management. The award is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an individual for achievement in these two professions.
Taylor will be honored during the Opening General Session of CSCMP’s Annual Global Conference in San Diego on September 27. He is the 45th person to receive the award since it was inaugurated in 1965 as a tribute to John Drury Sheahan, a pioneer logistics consultant and partner in the consulting firm that bore his name.
“Chuck Taylor is a true professional who has spent his career demonstrating the significance of the logistics and supply chain management disciplines in companies he has worked for and with,” said Rick Blasgen, CSCMP president and chief executive officer. “A dedicated mentor, Chuck is always accessible to colleagues and young professionals who benefit greatly from his wealth of experience. His unwavering commitment to our industry has been instrumental in bringing respect and well-deserved recognition to many with whom he has interacted.”
Taylor, currently a strategic consultant, speaker, and executive coach, has served the industry for over 40 years in the shipper, carrier, service provider, and educator communities. His insights into operating in a deregulated environment helped to positively impact the transportation profession in the 1980s and beyond. In the 1990s, he promoted industry adoption of emerging strategies in lean and third party logistics and partnerships, stressing the importance of planning for potential fuel shortages in the new millennium.
His career has included senior management positions with American National Can, Mercer Management Consultants, Nabisco Brands, Ryder System, Inc., and ServiceCraft Logistics. While business unit vice president for Burlington Northern/Santa Fe Railroad, he championed a unique partnership between the railroad and Coors Brewing Company which won the 1993 Distribution Magazine/AST&L Partnership of the Year Award.
The author of numerous articles including The end of cheap oil: Are you ready? published in CSCMP’s Supply Chain Quarterly in 2007, and a blog entitled On Energy for DC Velocity, Taylor is a long-time CSCMP member. He has served on the organization’s board of directors and on various committees. He holds a bachelor of business administration degree in production and logistics management and a master of business administration degree in logistics and finance from the University of Houston.
