Food and Drug Safety Regulation within the Supply Chain
This issue of CSCMP Hot Topics covers supply chain regulations with significant implications for supply chain management. Two important pieces of legislation affected food and drug supply chains: the Food Safety Modernization Act (FMSA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Safety and Modernization Act (FDASIA). FMSA was signed into law on January 4, 2011 and expanded the FDA’s authority over the nation’s food supply and, particularly, food imports. It also signaled a change in strategy from reactive to preventative and places a greater burden of responsibility for food safety on importers to assure their suppliers have strong quality programs in place. Congress and the agency understood major overhauls to the enormous food supply chain would take time—and it did. In accordance with the statute, regulations implementing the law were rolled out, but not without difficulty.
