Fulfilling the Promise of Integrated Retail: A Store Based N

This case received the Second Place Award  in the 2014 CSCMP Supply Chain Innovation Award competition. By way of two platforms, – Shop Your Way Rewards and Integrated Retail – the case features how Sears improved the speed of online fulfillment quickly without significant capital investment. As customers have shifted more of their shopping online, the company focused on utilizing a subset of the store network for online fulfillment, with locations strategically chosen based on geographical coverage and alignment with the UPS network. This enables the company to utilize its existing footprint, inventory already in the stores, and ground transportation to meet member needs quickly and effectively. The result was increased capacity during their “Peak” period (Thanksgiving week to Christmas) over the prior year by 30 percent, without requiring structural investment in additional distribution centers.  Note: Case material fees are nonrefundable.
