Influence of Product Design on Sustainability Performance

Influence of Product Design on Sustainability Performance
This CSCMP Explores…, The Influence of Product Design on the Sustainability Performance of Supply Chain, examines the importance and implications of coordinating the design of products and supply chains to produce sustainability and presents a tool that could help identify the most desired product and supply chain design in terms of economic, environmental, and societal sustainability benefits. Sustainability has now become a part of mainstream strategic policy and the planning process. Gone are the days when companies could use the mere pursuit of sustainability as a source of competitive advantage. While many companies emphasize the more obvious avenues to reducing emissions and waste in operations, another opportunity for significant benefits is looking at products during the design stage and assessing the resulting implications—financially, environmentally, and socially—across the entire lifecycle and, hence, the supply chain. Just as design drives the majority of a product’s costs, it also influences sustainability performance. Then, it is only natural that companies must consider the sustainability implications of a product on its supply chain, during product design. This practice of coordinating product and supply chain design decisions, and tools for decision support, can help companies in their pursuit of sustainability goals.
